STUDIO
Welcome to my studio! Here at home, I build all my frames.
Studio Martha Margarete came to life when I was looking for a recycled option for frames for my own prints. There wasn’t any. In fact, most cheap frames are made out of plastic wood imitates. Other timber frames are made from new materials, even though there are so many out there that can be reused. Especially timber doesn’t have to be new to be good-looking. The oldest fence post still surprises me when cut open. Like a new skin, resting under a weathered old one.
I started to learn how to use a table saw, how to archive the look of frames I had in mind. Something timeless, minimal, and yet modern. Wood bits we had lying around from old projects and didn’t bring it to heart to throw out were good for my first attempts of frames. Since then I have made frames out of timber from building sites, that were going to be demolished. Old bookshelves that had collapsed. An op shopped bed head, hardwood pallets, pine bed slats, … the list goes on. Taking it a bit further, I’ve then tried to source all other elements recycled as well. Walks on the beach with a lot of driftwood for splines. Op-shop visits for the glass of unwanted frames to be recut. Recycled kappa board for backings.
The results are fine picture frames with only recycled materials used. Hand-made from scratch and kind to the planet.
